Fortune Cookie

by J. Harker Shaw
Why does a fortune cookie taste so sweet
If the fortune is foul?
Is there a choice? If you don’t eat
The shell, shall you be saved
Your infelicitous fate
Printed on paper slip
Lying crumpled on your plate?

To leave the cookie unconsumed
Is not my way;
The temptation is too great.
I’ll satisfy this little craving,
And I’ll accept the fate.
